Blizzard strikes for Bushrangers

Heavyweight hitting by young batsman Aiden Blizzard and disciplined bowling from Victoria's seamers fired the Bushrangers to a 34-run victory over a disappointing South Australia in the Twenty20 match at Adelaide Oval last night.

Watched by a crowd of 8595, left-hander Blizzard (89, 38 balls, eight sixes) and Brad Hodge (76, 51 balls, three sixes) added 140 to set the visitors on the path to 7-203.

Set back when Mark Cosgrove was bowled by Gerard Denton's classic inswinger for a first-ball duck, SA's chase fell behind the required rate early and it finished at 8-169 as Denton (3-26), Shane Harwood (1-24) and Jon Moss (0-29) all succeeded in drying up the runs.

The 19th over, bowled by Denton, produced four wickets from only three legal deliveries as Daniel Harris' run-out from a wide was followed by Nathan Adcock skying a catch, Graham Manou being run out and top scorer Ken Skewes (78) losing his stumps to a yorker.

Skewes had needed runs to make up for dropping three catches - Hodge twice and Blizzard once.

Late in the Victorian innings, SA's outfield woes reached comic proportions when three Redbacks converged on a Hodge skied ball, then all stopped in fear of a collision, allowing the ball to fall harmlessly between them.

SA had made the ideal start when Ryan Harris (2-27) knocked back the middle stump of Moss with a leg cutter in the first over. Three replacement balls were needed as Blizzard took to Cosgrove's medium pace, at one stage scoring six, six, six, four, six, six in consecutive deliveries across two overs.
