Redbacks survive Gayle blitz to seal victory

Chris Gayle put on a one man show to thrill the WACA crowd hitting 40 runs off just 16 balls but it wasn't enough for the Warriors as the Redbacks earned a 29 run victory.

The West Indian got off to a slow start failing to score off the first 4 balls he faced before opening a blitz hitting 5 fours and 3 huge sixes to score 40 runs before a rib injury forced him to retire.

Gayle's departure was disappointing for the crowd who were enjoying some stunning shots but with the Warriors so far ahead of the run rate and with 9 wickets in hand they could afford do slow down.

After such a poor start the Redbacks hit back after the departure of Gayle, Luke Ronchi was caught by Cameron Borgas off the bowling of Shahid Afridi for just 10. Shaun Marsh (18) quickly followed Ronchi back in the pavilion after Jake Haberfield struck.

Mitchell Marsh (3) was caught and bowled by Daniel Christian an over later leaving the Warriors 103-3 after 10.2 overs and in some trouble. The Warriors were able to recover with Adam Voges and Theo Doropoulos (22) enjoying a partnership of 37 before Doropoulos was brilliantly caught by Kieron Pollard of his own bowling.

Pollard took another good catch to remove David Bandy (5) to give Christian his second wicket of the night before Gayle returned to the crease with the Warriors in trouble needing another 47 runs from just 27 balls.

Gayle's return only lasted 8 balls after Redbacks wicketkeeper Graham Manou took a stunning catch to leave the Warriors facing defeat.

Earlier in the evening Warriors captain Adam Voges won the toss and decided to field first looking to chase a small total under the floodlights later in the evening.

The Redbacks got off to a good start with Daniel Harris and Graham Manou enjoying a opening partnership of 27 before Manou was caught by Shaun Marsh off the bowling of Brad Knowles,

Tom Cooper (1) was run out 6 balls later by David Bandy to leave the Redbacks 29-2 before Cosgrove entered the contest. His partnership of 48 with Harris put the Redbacks on top.

Despite losing Harris and Shahid Afridi for a first ball duck the Redbacks continued to score with ease with Kieron Pollard (45) and Cameron Borgas (34) helping the Redbacks reach 196-6.
