Batting collapse hands victory to the Hurricanes
The Hobart Hurricanes cruised to a 31 run victory thanks to a top order batting collapse from the Perth Scorches in a low scorer encounter at the WACA in Perth.
Faced with a victory target of just 141, the Scorches slumped to a total of just 44-5 after some impressive bowling from Ben Hilfenhaus (2-10) and Ben Laughlin (1-14).
With Herschelle Gibbs (2), Simon Katich (8) and Micheal Hussey (0) back in the dugout early on the Scorches struggled to keep up with the required run rate with wickets falling at regular intervals.
Mitchell Marsh (35) and Nathan Rimmington (22) offered some resistance but it wasn’t enough to stop the home side slumping to a heavy defeat after they were bowled out for just 109 in the final over.
Having batted first the Hurricanes got off to a good start thanks to Travis Birt who smashed 40 runs from 30 deliveries which included four boundaries and a six.
Owais Shah (24) and Tom Triffitt (20) offered support but a low order batting collapse saw the visitors slumped to 140 all out after reaching 101-2 in the 14th over.
Despite the collapse the Hurricanes held on to record an impressive victory to get their KFC Big Bash League campaign off to a winning start.
