Storm force Gayle seals Thunder victory
Chris Gayle smashed a superb century to show why he is one of the biggest hitters in t20 cricket as he helped the Sydney Thunder seal a six wicket victory over the Adelaide Strikers at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
The West Indian big hitter smashed three boundaries and eleven sixes which included three off the bowling of Cameron Borgas (0-20) in the 17th over to help the Thunder chase down the Strikers victory target of 156 with nine balls to spare.
With David Warner missing because of international duty with Australia, Gayle took control of the match and thrilled the crowd with his first ever century in Australia which he completed with a quick single off the final ball of the 18th over.
Faced with a tricky run chase the Thunder got off to a poor start losing Daniel Smith (6), and Usman Khawaja (15) early on before Gayle started to put the visitors under pressure.
Ben Dunk (8) and Craig Philipson (2) offered little support but with Jason Floros (17) ensuring Gayle remained on strike as mush as possible the Thunder cruised to victory.
Having batted first the Strikers posted a total of 155-8 thanks in part to a cameo of 41 from Johan Botha who arrived at the crease with the visitors 101-5.
With the top order failing to fire it was left to Botha, Borgas (24) and Adam Crosthwaite (18) to give their bowlers a total they could defend providing Gayle was removed early on.
