Sixers scrape past Stars after SCG thriller
The Sydney Sixers held their nerve in the final over of the match to record a two run victory against the Melbourne Stars at the SCG to win their 2nd KFC Big Bash League group game.
Faced with a victory target of 167, the Stars came up just short despite two boundaries from Chris Simpson (8) in the final over which left Clint McKay needing to score 4 runs from the final delivery from Bret Lee.
With the pressure mounting, McKay could only drive a fuller ball from Lee to the fielder at mid-off to spark wild celebrations from the Sixers and the home crowd.
George Bailey (33) and David Hussey (42) got the Stars run chase off to a good start despite the early loss of Rob Quiney (14) and Matthew Wade (1), thanks to a 3rd wicket stand of 61 but when Bailey was dismissed by Steven Smith (2-27) in the 11th over the tide started to turn.
Hussey quickly followed and although Adam Voges (31) offers some hope, the Stars lost wickets at regular intervals to leave Simpson and McKay needing 15 runs from the finals over.
Having batted first the Stars posted a competitive total of 166-9 thanks in no small part to a quick fire half century from Dwayne Bravo (52) who smashed four boundaries and three sixes to end the game as the top scorer.
Nic Maddinson (24), Ben Rohrer (29) and Dominic Thornely (29) offered support to leave the Stars facing a tricky run chase.
