Renegades hopes almost ended by the Heat

The Melbourne Renegades hopes of reaching the KFC Big Bash semi finals received a major blow after they slumped to a 12 run defeat against the Brisbane Heat under the roof at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.

Faced with a victory target 169, the Renegades came up just short despite a impressive innings from Aaron Finch who almost saw the home side across the line with a resistant 72 which included three boundaries and five sixes.

With wickets falling at regular intervals Finch was left with just the tail to support him and this ultimately lead to his down fall when he was run out by Andrew Robinson at the end of 18th over.

Despite the victory the Heats own chances of reaching the knock out stages remain uncertain, even with a victory over the Sydney Thunder on Tuesday, the Heat will be left hoping for results o go there way if they are to qualify.

Having won the toss, the Heat posted a competitive total of 168-7 thanks in part to Daniel Vettori who smashed 40 runs during a 6th wicket stand of 72 with RE van der Merwe (36).

Matthew Hayden (28) Chris Lynn (34) got the Heats innings of to a positive start with a 2nd wicket stand of 59 but a middle order collapse left the visitors 74-5 before Vettori and van der Merwe rescued the innings.
