Sixers hold off the Scorchers fight back
The Sydney Sixers kept the Perth Scorchers at bay to seal a tense one run victory at the SCG after a dramatic ending to the Scorchers run chase on Wednesday night.
Faced with a run chased of 177 the Scorchers looked out of the game after Mitchell Starc (3-28) picked up three wickets in the 5th over to leave the visitors 34-4 after Shaun Marsh (18), Mitchell Marsh (0) and Paul Collingwood (2) in the space of four deliveries.
Marcus North (59) kept the Scorchers in contention but it was a cameo from Luke Ronchi who set up the dramatic finish; the wicket keeper smashed 34 runs from just 13 balls to leave visitors needing 13 runs from the final over.
With the pressure mounting Brett Lee (0-35) recovered from bowling a no ball and a wide to deny the Scorchers with the final delivery of the game which North was unable to get away for the two runs needed to record a dramatic victory.
Despite losing the Scorchers remained top of the KFC Big Bash ground standings meaning they will play at the WACA on Friday against either the Brisbane Heat or the Melbourne Stars.
Having won the toss the Sixers recorded an impressive total of 176 from their innings thanks in part to cameos from Steven Smith (51) and Nic Maddinson.
The victory ensures the Sixers secure third spot in the group standings which means they will face the Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday in the 2nd semi final.
