Stars hold on for victory despite Gayle blitz

The Melbourne Stars booked their place in the Big Bash semi-finals at the expense of the Sydney Thunder who become the first team to remain winless during an entire season after they slipped to a 13 run defeat at the MCG.

The Stars successfully defended a total of 145-8 despite a 43 ball blitz from Chris Gayle who finally burst into action with a quick fire 65 which included six boundaries and four sixes.

Usman Khawaja (23) offered support but with victory in sight the Thunder lost their last seven wickets with the addition of just 32 runs to end the match 13 runs short after they were bowled out for 132.

The Stars suffered their own batting woes despite cameos from Brad Hodge (39) and David Hussey (32) who helped the home side posts a total of 145-8 which proved to be enough.
