Knight Riders hold on to secure vital victory

The Kolkata Knight Riders survived a major scare to register a tense two run victory over the Auckland Aces to start their t20 Champions League qualifying campaign on the right note.

Faced with a victory target of 122, the Aces went into the final over needing 11 runs but Kyle Mills (19) and Andre Adams (9) were unable to see the Kiwis home thanks to Bret Lee who conceded just eight runs to secure the victory

Having been restricted to a total of just 121-6 the Knight Riders were in serious danger of suffering a heavy defeat after Jimmy Adams (18) and Lou Vincent (40) shared a second wicket stand of 60 from just 9.0 overs to put the Kiwis on top.

Inspired by Yusuf Pathan (2-21) who picked up the wickets of Adams and Robert Quiney (0) in the space of three deliveries the Knight Riders struck back to leave the Aces 61-4 at the end of the 10th over.

Gareth Hopkins (10) soon followed and despite cameos from Colin Munro (20) and Mills the Aces were unable to secure their first victory in this years tournament.

Having won the toss, the Knight Riders got off to a great start thanks to Mavinder Bisla (45) and Jacques Kallis (33) who shared an opening stand of 73.

Pathan added 12 before a middle order collapse saw the IPL franchise slump from 93-2 to 106-6 in the space of three overs as the Aces fought their way back into the game to restrict the Knight Riders to a total of just 121-6.
