The former Zimbabwe all-rounder hit two sixes and five fours in a 29-ball knock as the home side reached 100-3 with 16 balls to spare.
In a match reduced to 15 overs per side, Essex could only muster 99-8 as seamer David Griffiths took 3-13.
James Bruce and Greg Lamb provided accurate support with two wickets each.
