West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards is set to take the Twenty20 stage at Grace
Road next week. The former West Indies captain has been named by Lashings in a
squad of 14 players for a spectacular Twenty2O style benefit match for Leicestershire
captain and former England all-rounder Phil DeFreitas.
Richards is joined in the Lashings squad by other West Indian greats like Ritchie
Richardson, Curtly Ambrose and Jimmy Adams, Australian Mark Waugh and former Leicestershire
overseas star Shahid Afridi, the big-hitting Pakistan batsmen.
The match takes place on Thursday July 1 with a 5pm start – just 24 hours
before Leicestershire play their first Twenty20 Cup match against Lancashire at
Old Trafford. DeFreitas said: “It will be a pleasure to have some of these
great players on view at Grace Road and we will be using the match as a very serious
warm-up for our Twenty20 Cup campaign. We reached finals day last season and we
want to get there again this time.”
Tickets for the game are available from Grace Road. The cost is a £10 donation
for an adult and a £6 donation for a juvenile. The full Lashings squad is:
V Richards, R Richardson, S Williams, S Campbell, J Murray, C Ambrose, J Adams,
V Drakes, M Waugh, G Flower, H Olonga, A Campbell, S Afridi, R Latif.
