Hampshire hope to snap up the former Australia all-rounder Ian Harvey to replace Shane Watson as their overseas player for the Twenty20 competition.
The 36-year-old has been without a county since last year's decision by the Home Office to turn down his application for British Citizenship because of a drink-driving conviction.
There remains a doubt about the signing though as Harvey recently played for the Chennai Superstars in the Indian Cricket League (ICL).
The chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lalit Modi, has warned that any county fielding ICL players will be disqualified from the recently announced Champions League.
Watson is unavailable after being recalled to Australia's one-day squad for their games in the West Indies after Matthew Hayden was ruled out with an injury.
