Steelbacks aim for further improvements

You ain't seen nothing yet - that's the verdict of Northamptonshire Steelbacks skipper Nicky Boje – despite the fact his side made it three wins from three games in the Twenty20 Cup.

They put in another very impressive display to beat Gloucestershire Gladiators by 25 runs to keep them two points clear at the top of the Midlands/West and Wales group on six.

But, although the County have been comfortable winners in all three matches, Boje is still looking for more.

"I don't think we're playing our best yet – but we're winning and that's what's important," the South African said.

"However, you've always got to look to improve. Batting, bowling and fielding-wise we are probably running on about 16 overs of good cricket in either innings.

"We're yet to put in a full 20 with either bat or ball so there is room to go. You can't help it if someone bowls you a really good over. That is just good cricket from them.

"But we can work on our shot selection and our approach at certain times.

"Also we're possibly missing out on quite a lot of singles.
"If you get a team that, out of the 120 balls they bowl to you, they don't bowl one dot ball then you are going to be looking at scoring close to 200 every game."

That said, the Steelbacks game has been functioning well so far.
And, with a side that effectively includes seven all-rounders – if you include Niall O'Brien as a wicketkeeper/batsman – then there are plenty of people for Boje to turn to. A treat for any captain.

He added: "It does help having that backup in the batting and the bowling.

"In this game Steven Crook did not get a bowl and on Friday it was Lance Klusener.

"On this occasion it was Lance who got us a couple of really important wickets and bowled very well.

"It was a surface that suited him and it paid off giving him a go.
"It's the same with the batting. We've always got a couple of guys padded up and ready to go depending on the situation.

"It really helps as a captain to have that flexibility and those options."

The Steelbacks are back in action again on Tuesday against Gloucestershire at Milton Keynes.
