Glamorgan will take a welcome break from their county championship nightmare when Twenty20 fever hits the English summer once more.
Glamorgan will take a welcome break from their county championship nightmare when Twenty20 fever hits the English summer once more.
Due to the success of the game's shortened format, the Twenty20 Cup has been expanded with Glamorgan and the other counties facing eight matches in two weeks.
Robert Croft's men will be aiming to at least repeat last summer's performances when they reached the finals day at Edgbaston before losing to eventual winners Leicestershire.
And after losing seven of their opening eight championship games and making a stuttering start to the defence of their totesport title, Glamorgan are hoping their Twenty20 vision can salvage something from a poor season.
'After doing so well in the competition last season, we are looking forward to the next two weeks and will try to regain some form for the second half of the season,' said Glamorgan coach John Derrick.
'It will be a welcome break from the championship and we'll also try and get some of our bowlers back to fitness.
Glamorgan will load their overseas batting stars Sourav Ganguly and Matthew Elliott at the top of the order batting order, but have injury worries going into the tournament with doubts surrounding Alex Wharf, Darren Thomas and Adam Harrison.
The Welsh county start their busy schedule tomorrow when they entertain Somerset at Cardiff, one of three matches to be played under the new £275,000 permanent floodlights at Sophia Gardens.
Those three matches will start at 7pm, while the game at Swansea against Warwickshire will start at 3pm.
Each county will play three teams in their group at home and away, and one each either just at home or away with Glamorgan facing Northamptonshire and Worcestershire only once.
The top two teams in each of the three regional groups, plus the two best third-placed teams, progress to the quarter-finals on July 18, before the finals day at the Brit Oval on Saturday, June 30.
There will be plenty of other entertainment during Glamorgan's home matches, including a catching competition, prize giveaways by Brains, face painters, hot tubs on the boundary edge and cheerleaders going around the ground.
The Army will also have special displays in the games at Cardiff on June 22 and July 5.
