Aussie batsman David Hussey believes Notts have more than enough talent to capture
the Twenty20 Cup. The 26-year-old is eager to taste the atmosphere of the competition
that packed grounds - including Trent Bridge - in its inaugural year last summer.
And he is convinced his new team-mates can improve on last year's disappointment
when Notts won just one of their group matches. They start their quest for a place
at the finals day at Edgbaston when they take on Durham at home on Friday.
He said: "I think we have got the players to win the competition. Mark Ealham
is a great player and is in really good form and I don't think there is a better
finisher in one-day cricket than Chris Read. And then we have got Kevin Pietersen
who is an exceptional talent. I have got to say that if we don't get through to
at least the semi-finals, it is going to be a massive underachievement."
But Hussey is determined to make an impression himself. His brother Mike was second
in the averages for the competition last year when he was playing for Northamptonshire.
He scored 279 runs, which included 88 against Somerset and an unbeaten 79 against
Glamorgan. Hussey said: "I watched some of the games last year and it looks
like a lot of fun."
"My brother did particularly well but, personally, I am not going into it
with great expectations for myself. I just want to get out there, enjoy it and
look to make some big shots. We have been exceptional of late in both the four-day
game and the limited-over stuff and the spirit in the camp is fantastic. At the
moment, it's a case of the more cricket the merrier."
It will also give him the opportunity to play in front of some big crowds. Notts
have further home matches against Yorkshire and Derbyshire before travelling to
Leicestershire and Lancashire.
But Hussey is delighted to be playing his cricket in the city and is confident
the team can continue their progress over the rest of the summer. He said: "Last
year, there were packed houses at Trent Bridge for these matches and that will
be a bit of a first for me. I'm excited about the prospect and I cannot wait to
get going. I was a bit worried when I first came in because there was quite a
lot of expectation, with me replacing Damien Martyn."
"But I have just concentrated on my own game and I'm loving it at the moment.
Nottingham is a fantastic place to live and there is something always going on.
It's great that Twenty20 has come around now and it will be a nice break from
the championship. I'm looking forward to it and I believe we can do really well."
