Derbyshire have today been hit by the news that Charl Langeveldt has been ruled out of playing for the club this season by injury.
The South African fast-bowler aggravated an old shoulder problem playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.
He returned to the Cape Cobras where he we told that he requires an immediate operation and would be out for four to five months.
Langeveldt was set for his second season with the Phantoms after an outstanding 2008 campaign which saw him take 55 first-class wickets at an average of 22.50 and 79 wickets in all competitions.
He was reluctantly allowed to join the IPL franchise and the injury struck during his solitary appearance in the competition.
Head of Cricket John Morris said: “Obviously this is devastating news not just for us but also for Charl and unfortunately there is absolutely nothing we can say or do which will change the outcome.
“The only thing we can do is get on with the season as professionally as possible.”
