Somerset's South African Test captain Graeme Smith was lbw to Carl Greenidge from the first ball of the match after he won the toss and chose to bat.
Keith Parsons and James Hildreth also fell for ducks as Greenidge and Steve Kirby claimed two wickets each and Mark Hardinges took 3-18 from three overs.
Ian Blackwell was on 15 as the score reached 61-7 before rain intervened.
