Lancashire have included overseas replacement star Dinesh Mongia in their 14-man
squad to take on Leicestershire at Old Trafford in the Twenty20 Cup. It will be
the first experience of the 20-over format for the India international, who has
been brought in as cover for the injured Carl Hooper (fractured thumb).
Seam bowler Peter Martin is also selected after missing their recent Frizzell
County Championship draw with Northamptonshire, while Glen Chapple is out with
a head injury. Australian run-machine Stuart Law will lead the batting attack
with Mal Loye, and all-rounder Dominic Cork will be hoping to make an impact with
both bat and ball. Leicestershire have omitted county regular Darren Robinson
from their 13-man squad.
Robinson is rested for the 20-over format with Damian Brandy brought in as his
replacement. Leicestershire’s director of cricket James Whitaker said: “The
players are all excited about playing in the Twenty20 Cup again after the success
of reaching Finals Day last season. It is a terrific competition that gives the
players the chance to both show their abilities and enjoy themselves."
“But it is also a very important competition for us, and we want to try
and go one better than we did last season when we lost in the semi-final. When
you look down the list of names in our squad I honestly believe we have the men
for all seasons that should be capable of doing well in this competition. What
we need to find at the moment however is consistency.”
Australian star Brad Hodge, who finished as the top run scorer in the competition
last season with 301, is included alongside Paul Nixon who leads the way with
the most sixes in limited-overs matches this season.
