The Northants Steelbacks have pulled off a major coup by signing the worlds number one rated batsman Virender Sehwag as they look to put last years disappointing Twenty20 Finals Day defeat against the Sussex Sharks behind them.
Sehwag who has played in 76 Test Matches and more than 220 One Day Internationals will join the Steelbacks for this summers Friends Provident t20 tournament.
The move is subject to approval from the BCCI but Sehwag’s arrival at the County Ground will spark worldwide media attention for one of County crickets less fashionable teams.
Sehwag, who holds the record for scoring the fastest century by an Indian in One Day International cricket, will join the Steelbacks to spearhead their bid for glory in the new Friends Provident t20 tournament which replaces the Twenty20 Cup.
Steelbacks Chief Executive Mark Tagg was delighted by the signing and hopes the arrival of Sehwag at the County Ground will show how much ambition the County has.
"This is absolutely fantastic news for the club and shows everyone that we want to continue our year on year improvement. Hopefully this shows our fans we are serious in our ambitions to become the best County Cricket Club in the country" said Tagg.
Sehwag who is currently ranked the world’s number batsman by the ICC has played 52 first class Twenty20 matches scoring over 1200 runs at an average of 26.65 with a highest score of 94. He has also taken 16 wickets at an average of 23.12.
