Tom Smith hit a stylish half century to help the Lancashire Lightning set the Northants Steelbacks a target of 158 to chase for victory at Old Trafford.

Having won the toss Glen Chapple decided to bat first and his decision paid off as Smith made light work of the Steelbacks attack despite the early lose of Paul Horton (6).

Smith was joined at the crease by Aussies Simon Katich and the pair built a second wicket partnership of 69 to give the Lightning control of the game.

All though Chaminda Vaas struck twice in the space of 4 balls in the 13th over removing Smith (67) and Katich (26) the home side maintained control of the game.

Stephen Moore scored a vital 27 runs to help the home side reach 157-5 despite losing a couple of wickets in the final two overs.
