The Lancashire Lightning cruised to a 69 run victory over the Northants Steelbacks who slumped to their third straight Friends Provident t20 defeat.
Set a total of 158 for victory the Steelbacks got off to a good start with Mal Loye and Lou Vincent enjoying an opening partnership of 26 before Vincent (11) was dismissed by Sajid Mahmood in the third over.
Loye and Niall O’Brien added another 16 runs before the visitors suffered a major batting collapse which saw them lose 6 wickets in the space of 27 balls to leave them 56-7 at the end of the 10th over.
With the middle order ripped out the Steelbacks limped to a heavy defeat with only James Middlebrook (14) offering any resistant’s.
Earlier Tom Smith hit a stylish half century to help the Lightning set up the victory after Glen Chapple won the toss and decided to bat first. Despite losing the wicket of Paul Horton (6) early on Smith made light work of the Steelbacks attack.
Smith was joined at the crease by Aussies Simon Katich and the pair built a second wicket partnership of 69 to give the Lightning control of the game.
All though Chaminda Vaas struck twice in the space of 4 balls in the 13th over removing Smith (67) and Katich (26) the home side maintained control of the game.
Stephen Moore scored a vital 27 runs to help the home side reach 157-5 despite losing a couple of wickets in the final two overs.
