Michael Yardy held his nerve to help the Sussex Sharks claim a thrilling 4 wicket victory over the Kent Spitfires after scoring the winning runs with just 2 balls to spare.
Set a total of 164 for victory the Sharks got off to a good start with Brendon McCullum and Matt Prior enjoying an opening partnership of 55 before the McCullum (16) was dismissed by James Tredwell.
Prior (47) and Murray Goodwin (9) soon followed to leave the Sharks 73-3 at the start of the 10th over. Luke Wright (21) and Chris Nash (24) added some valuable runs before Yardy’s contribution of 36 to seal the victory.
Having won the toss Sharks skipper Mike Yardy put the Spitfires into bat and it was a decision which paid off straight away thanks to Robin Martin-Jenkins who bowled Joe Denly (5) in the 3rd over.
Robert Key (23) and Martin van Jaarsveld (23) added valuable runs before a partnership of 73 between Geraint Jones and Darren Stevens turned the game in favor of the Spitfires.
Jones (32) was dismissed by Yasir Arafat in the 17th before to leave Stevens (52) to see out the last 3 overs and claim another Twenty20 half century to help the home side reach 163-5.
