The Middlesex Panthers cruised to a 84 run victory over the Glamorgan Dragons thanks to an impressive innings from Twenty20 World Cup winner Eoin Morgan who smashed 79 runs from just 34 delivers at Old Deer Park in Richmond.
With an imposing total of 214 to chase the Dragons got off to a good start with Mark Cosgrove and Jim Allenby building an opening partnership of 37 before Cosgrove (17) was dismissed by Gareth Berg in the 4th over.
With opener Allendy (30) still at the crease the Dragons were well placed to chase down such a large total but when the opener was bowled by Neil Dexter the visitors suffered a middle order collapse.
Jamie Dalrymple (9), Tom Maynard (1) and David Brown (2) quickly followed to leave the visitors 70-5 after 9.2 overs. Gareth Rees (29) offered some resistance but when he was bowled by Shaun Udal the Dragons hopes had all but disappeared.
With the Dragons on the verge of defeat Tom Smith (4-23) ripped through the lower order picking up four wickets to help the Panthers secure a comprehensive victory.
Having been out into bat by the Dragons Adam Gilchrist and opening partner David Warner built an opening partnership of 50 before Warner (13) was bowled by David Brown. Neil Dexter (0) followed two balls later to leave the home side 50-2 after 5.4 overs.
Gilchrist now partnered by Owais Shah completed his half century before he was trapped LBW by Robert Croft at the start of the 9th over as the Dragons started to fight back.
The balance of power shifted back towards the Panthers thanks to Shah (30) and Eoin Morgan who shared a 4th wicket partnership of 88 which saw Morgan race to 50 from just 22 delivers before Shah was dismissed by James Harris at the end of the 16th over.
With Shah gone Morgan was now joined by David Malan (27) and the pair added another 43 runs from the final 3 overs to leave the Dragons under pressure with a mammoth run chase of 214.
