The Gloucestershire Gladiators stunned the previously undefeated Sussex Sharks thanks to a 8 run victory over the defending champs at the County Ground in Hove.
Set a target of 179 for victory the Sharks got off to a good thanks to Brendan McCullum who scored a quick fire 46 before he was dismissed by Vikram Banerjee.
With McCullum and opening partner Matt Prior (10) all ready back in the dugout the Sharks unbeaten run was under threat.
Stand in skipper Murray Goodwin added a vital 31 runs before he was dismissed and although Joe Gatting (30) remained at the crease until the end of the game the Sharks slipped to defeat.
Earlier James Franklin stared with the bat for the Gladiators scoring an impressive 90 from just 50 balls to help the visitors set the Sharks a total of 179 to chase.
Franklin’s 50 ball innings included 11 fours and 3 sixes as the Kiwi put the Sharks bowlers to the sword with some aggressive hitting.
Despite losing Jon Lewis (12) at the end of the second over Franklin and Hamish Marshall (37) put on a second wicket stand of 91 to put the visitors in charge.
With skipper Mike Yardy missing because of international duty the Sabres looked out of sorts with Franklin taking advantage of some pretty ordinary bowling.
Chris Taylor (9), Alex Gidman (10) and Steve Snell (10) all added valuable run but it was Franklin who made the biggest impact despite missing out on a well deserved century after he was bowled by Chad Keegen at the end of the 18th over.
