Shahid Afridi picked up five wickets to help the Hampshire Royals seal a 16 run Duckworth Lewis victory over the Gloucestershire Gladiators during a rain interrupted match at the Rose Bowl.
Faced with a victory target of 140, the Gladiators got off to a poor start which saw them loss Hamish Marshall (10) and Kevin O’Brien (1) inside the opening three overs.
Despite the bad start Kane Williamson and Ian Cockbain built a 3rd wicket stand of 39 to put the Gladiators on top before Cockbain (24) was bowled by Shahid Afridi in the 8th over.
Chris Taylor (2) and Will Gidman (7) quickly followed before rain forced the players off the pitch for over 30 minutes. When play got back under way the Gladiators were given a revised total of 124 from 17 overs.
When play got back under way Shahid Afridi struck twice more (20-5) to remove Richard Coughtrie (0) and Ian Saxelby (0) as the Gladiators slumped to defeat.
Having batted first the Royals recorded a total of 139-7 thanks in part to Jimmy Adams who scored 47 runs before he was bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan in the 11th over.
The loss of Adams sparked a middle order collapse which saw Sean Ervine (4), Neil McKenzie (8) and Shahid Afridi (5) dismissed cheaply before Dimitri Mascarenhas smashed 25 runs from just 13 balls.
