Lightning fight back stuns the Steelbacks

The Lancashire Lightning strengthened their chances of securing a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals after they completed a tense 3 run victory over the lowly Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

Faced with a total of just 111 to defend, the Lightning fought their way back into the game after the Steelbacks seemed on course for a simple victory thanks to a well timed half century from Alex Wakely (52).

Having reached 78-2, the Steelbacks needed just 33 more runs from 34 deliveries but the Lightning slowly turned the screw as the runs started to dry up for the hosts after Rob White (33) and Wakely were dismissed in the closing stages.

With seven runs needed from the final over, Junaid Khan (2-12) held his nerve to help the Lightning secure an unlikely victory which leaves two points away from securing a quarter final spot.

Having batted first, the Lightning struggled on a two pace wicket which the Steelbacks bowlers used to their advantage thanks to Jack Brooks (2-23) and Lee Daggett (2-17) who led the hosts attack early on.

With no batsman dominating with the bat, Gareth Cross (18) and Karl Brown (16) led the way before Steelbacks skipper Andrew Hall (3-17) picked up three quick wickets to help restrict the visitors to a total of just 110-9.
