Impressive Stevens inspires Spitfires victory

James Fitzpatrick | cricket20

Darren Stevens was in impressive form to help the Kent Spitfires seal a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals thanks to a 15 run victory over the Essex Eagles at the County Ground in Chemlsford.

Stevens played a central role with the bat scoring 41 runs before picking up four wickets to help the Spitfire restrict the Eagles to a total of 168-9 despite quick fire cameos from Graham Napier (26) and Scott Styris (40).

It proved to be another record breaking night for Stevens, who became the first player to score 2,000 runs in the tournament just a night after over taking Darren Maddy as the tournaments all time leading run scorer.

Having been put into bat, Rob Denly (69) got the innings off to the perfect for the visitors before Stevens and Azhar Mahmood (31) steered the Spitfires to an imposing total of 183-3.

The victory seals the Spitfires place in the quarter finals while the Eagles will be left to reflect on the decision by the TV umpire who overturned a catch from Styris at third man which would have removed Stevens early on in his innings.
