Gladiators end Sabres winning run; Hales shines

The Gloucestershire Gladiators saw off the Somerset Sabres by nine wickets to end the Sabres unbeaten start to this years Friends Life t20 at the County Ground in Taunton.

Hamish Marshall smashed 66 runs to help the Gladiators chase down the Sabres total of 140-8 with 32 balls to spare to keep their hopes of reaching the Friends Life t20 quarter finals.

It proved to be a disappointing night for the home side who lost for the first time in this years tournament despite cameos from Albie Morkel (33) and Lewis Gregory (21).

Elsewhere in the Midlands group the Worcestershire Royals kept the pressure in the Sabres at the top of the group thanks to a 19 run victory over the Welsh Dragons at the County Ground in Worcester.

The Warwickshire Bears also capitalised from the Sabres loss thanks to a seven wicket victory over the Northants Steelbacks in a one sided match at the County Ground in Northampton.

Fresh from a scintillating 99 for England against the West Indies last weekend Alex Hales was in impressive form again thanks to a quick fore 88 for the Nottinghamshire Outlaws.

Hales smashed six boundaries and fours sixes to help the home side post an imposing total of 210-3 which proved too much for the Durham Dynamos to chase down at Trent Bridge after they were restricted to just 169-7 to lose by 41 runs

In other Northern Group action Yorkshire Carnegie came out on top against the Lancashire Lightning thanks to a 19 run victory in the Roses clash at Headingley in Leeds.

Elsewhere in the Northern Group the Leicestershire Foxes bad run of form came to an end after the defending champions saw off the Derbyshire Falcons by four wickets at the County Ground in Derby.

Glenn Maxwell was the hero for the Hampshire Royals after he smashed 60 runs from just 24 deliveries to help the Hampshire Hawks seal a six wicket victory over the Essex Eagles.

The visitors had slipped to 94-4 in their attempts to chase down 176-6 before Maxwell smashed six boundaries and four sixes to seal victory with twelve balls to spare.

The Sussex Sharks all but sealed their place in the quarter finals thanks to a crushing 83 run victory over the Kent Spitfires at the County Ground in Hove.

Faced with a target of 212-6 tp chase down the visitors were restricted to a total of just 129 in a one sided match to leave the own quarter final hopes hanging by a thread.
