The Middlesex Panthers held their nerve to seal a one wicket victory over the Surrey Lions in a tense London derby at the Kia Oval to leave the home side rooted to the bottom of the Friends Life t20 Southern Group.
Faced with a victory target of 155, the Panthers sealed victory with one ball to spare thanks to a boundary from Tom Smith after the visitors lost two wickets in the final over of the match.
Having batted first the Lions recorded a total of 154-4 but it proved to be in vain despite a cameo from Kevin Pietersen who smashed 42 runs to break a recent batting slump.
The nights only other match which was completed saw the Essex Eagles seal a 23 run victory over the Kent Spitfires at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.
Elsewhere the match at the Rose Bowl between the Hampshire Royal and the Sussex Sharks was abandoned in the 18th over because of heavy rain after the Sharks had reached 203-5.
