Joe Root smashed a quick fore half century to help Yorkshire Carnegie seal 29 run victory over the Worcestershire Royals at Headingley to seal their place in next month’s Friends Life t20 Finals day in Cardiff.

Root (65) smashed eleven boundaries during a 40 ball innings to help the home side record a mammoth total of 212-5 after skipper Andrew Gales won the toss and elected to bat first.

David Miller (50) and Gary Balance (46) added valuable runs down the order to leave the Royals facing a tricky run chase of 213 to record an unlikely victory.

Despite a half century from Philip Hughes (80), the Royals were unable to stay in contention as they slipped to a total of just 183-6 to crash out of the tournament.
