Nottinghamshire today revealed the new recruit signed to boost their Twenty20 Cup campaign . . . a giant furry red squirrel.
The new team mascot, called Nuts, will be featured all over buses and on posters across Nottingham from the start of June and will also be in action at the Notts Outlaws home games.
It’s all designed to get more youngsters hooked on cricket’s fastest and most exciting competition, with Notts introducing special group ticket offers for kids as well as plenty of other entertainment during matches.
Marketing manager Claire Harrison said: “Twenty20 is perfect family entertainment and Nuts will make the occasions even more colourful and help to ensure that whatever’s happening on the pitch, youngsters enjoy themselves.
“We wanted a woodland creature as mascot for the Outlaws and felt that red squirrels would fit in perfectly with Twenty20 cricket.
“They’re cheeky and lovable and I’m sure Nuts will be a big hit with young supporters.”
Notts have always led the way with innovative advertising campaigns since the competition began in 2003, attracting coverage nationwide for ‘making cricket sexy’ with posters of players with their shirts off.
Subsequent schemes using seamer Ryan Sidebottom and the Robin Hood theme of ‘Outlaws alive in Nottinghamshire’ have been equally successful, with more than 30,000 people flooding through the gates for the four home matches last year.
Notts also host the Twenty20 Cup Finals Day on Saturday August 12 and Claire added: “Crowds at Trent Bridge have grown every season and we’re confident 2006 will be the best year yet.
“Hopefully Nuts will inspire the team to some success on the field and we’ll see him leading the boys out for the final in August.”
Advance group bookings available include eight children and two adults for £50, while 10 adults can book their seats for a special rate of £80.
Advance tickets cost £10 for adults and students, £5 for children and £25 for a family of two adults and two children.
