Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire

Yorkshire Phoenix lost their third consecutive Twenty20 Cup match at Headingley today as bottom-of-the-table Nottinghamshire snatched a six-wicket win with two balls to spare.

Although Yorkshire posted a reasonable score of 180 for seven after being put in to bat, it proved to be insufficient as Will Smith and man-of-the-match Graeme Swann featured in an opening stand of 101 in only eight overs.

Swann was out for 62 from just 25 balls, mis-hitting a reverse sweep off Richard Dawson, having hit nine fours and three sixes.

Smith went on to make 44 from 40 balls with seven fours and two sixes before he drove young leg-spinner Mark Lawson to long on.

Lawson also picked up the wicket of David Hussey who was caught on the long-off boundary, and when Gareth Clough was pinned lbw by a Tim Bresnan yorker, Notts were 151 for four in the 16th over and suddenly under some unexpected pressure.

Bresnan sandwiched a tight over between two good ones from Ian Harvey which left Nottinghamshire needing nine for victory off the last over.

Chris Read, captain in the absence of Stephen Fleming, lashed Craig White's first ball high over cover and into the crowd for six.

He then ran two to level the scores and won the match with an extra cover boundary.

Yorkshire had made the worst possible start to their innings when Harvey sliced the first ball from Andy Harris straight to David Alleyne at third man.

But White and Phil Jaques staged a good recovery with a 64 partnership in seven overs, the stand ending when Read stumped White off a leg-side wide from Clough.

Jaques completed his second half-century of this season's competition but then dragged a Swann delivery to Greg Smith at mid-wicket to perish for 55 from 33 deliveries, including three fours and four sixes.

Anthony McGrath made a useful 25 in the middle order but it was a late 31 from 17 balls from Richard Pyrah, who was well supported by Bresnan, that helped Yorkshire recover from 133 for six.

Fleming and Mark Ealham were not included in Nottinghamshire's line-up because of slight injuries, while England informed Yorkshire that they did not wish fast bowler Matthew Hoggard to play.
