Durham v Leicestershire

Leicestershire met feeble opposition in the clash between the top and bottom sides in the Twenty20 Cup's North Division at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday night.

With HD Ackerman stroking 87 off 57 balls, the Foxes made 183 for seven, the highest score in the competition at the Riverside ground.

Durham slumped to 21 for five in reply before acting captain Jimmy Maher partially spared their blushes with an unbeaten 55 in their total of 104 for eight.

Durham intended to field the same side as in their two-run home defeat by Derbyshire on Saturday, but had to make a late change when Phil Mustard's partner went into labour.

This was a disappointment for the 3,000 fans following the excitement provided by the wicketkeeper's 67 not out off 33 balls against Derbyshire.

With Ackerman doing the bulk of the scoring from classy front-foot strokes, Leicestershire had 39 on the board in the fifth over when Neil Killeen struck with successive balls.

Darren Maddy clipped a catch straight to short midwicket then Dinesh Mongia tried to pull the next ball and top-edged a catch to Ben Harmison at mid-on.

Durham began to bowl shorter to Ackerman, but his cuts and pulls were as well-directed as his drives as he collected 14 fours and hardly hit a ball in the air.

Ackerman looked certain to overhaul Mal Loye's record Twenty20 score against Durham of 100 until he was run out in the 17th over.

Jeremy Snape drove off-spinner Gary Scott to long-off and Ackerman went back for the second but failed to beat Neil Killeen's throw.

Scott then clung on superbly to a fierce return drive from John Sadler but his figures were spoilt in his last three balls as Snape and Jim Allenby drove him for straight sixes.

Snape was yorked by Mick Lewis off the last ball of the innings after hitting 41 off 21 balls with four fours and a six.

By the fifth over of their reply Durham were 16 for three and had youngsters Harmison and Dave Barrick at the crease.

When they fell in quick succession it was 21 for five when Maher went in, but all he could do was ensure respectability.
