Yorkshire v Lancashire

Brilliant batting by man-of-the-match Michael Lumb propelled Yorkshire Phoenix to an overwhelming seven-wicket victory over Lancashire Lightning at Headingley to give the Tykes a Roses double in the Twenty20 Cup and put them into the quarter-final draw.

The left-hander smashed an unbeaten 84 off 49 deliveries with 13 fours and three sixes as Yorkshire made light work of overtaking Lancashire's 131 for nine, out of which Andrew Flintoff smacked 47 off 28 balls with five fours and two sixes.

There were still six overs and two balls remaining when Lumb hit the winning runs with a big six off left-arm spinner Simon Marshall.

Lumb was in such fine form that he had Flintoff withdrawn from the attack after the England all-rounder's second over had cost him 16 runs. With three consecutive scoring shots, Lumb whipped Flintoff through mid-wicket for four, pulled him for another four and then struck him high over mid-wicket for six.

Three powerful fours and a six by Lumb in the next over from Tom Smith took him to his half-century off just 23 balls with nine fours and two sixes and with Yorkshire standing on 58 for five in only five overs they were able to ease their foot off the pedal.

Craig White was happy to be the sleeping partner in an opening stand of 73 in seven overs with Lumb and when the Yorkshire captain was caught behind off Gary Keedy he had contributed just eight to the partnership.

Darren Lehmann joined Lumb in a 63 stand in six overs and the pair looked like winning the match off their own bats until Lehmann flicked Kyle Hogg behind the corner to be caught by Stuart Law for 37 from 20 deliveries with five fours and a six.

Only Flintoff could break the stranglehold imposed by Yorkshire's bowlers after Lancashire had batted first on winning the toss. He came in when Jason Gillespie trapped Nathan Astle lbw in the first over and he opened out against Deon Kruis, flicking a ball from the South African paceman over mid-wicket for six and in the same over carting him for four through the legside and pulling him for another six.

Lancashire were always in with a chance of a reasonable score as long as Flintoff was there but he was fifth out in the 14th over when off-spinner, Richard Dawson held on to a stinging return catch.

Dawson and Tim Bresnan each claimed three wickets but it was the spin combination of Dawson and Lehmann, who took two for 16 in his four overs, which really put the blocks on Lancashire.

The crowd attendance was 14,215, just below the ground's capacity.
