Kent v Essex

New signing Tyron Henderson produced a fine all-round performance as Kent beat Essex by 39 runs in the Twenty20 Cup.

Kent Spitfires opened the Twenty20 Cup campaign with a 39-run victory over Essex Eagles at Beckenham after dismissing the visitors for 147 with eight balls remaining.

The most impressive performance in their victory was from new signing Tyron Henderson, the South African who only arrived in the country a few hours earlier as a replacement for compatriot Justin Kemp. Henderson had three for 17 in four overs and he hit an entertaining 31 from only 19 balls.

The Eagles, chasing 187, scored 28 from the first three overs and then lost two wickets in the fourth over to Henderson.

With his first ball he had Mark Pettini (14) caught at deep square leg by Neil Dexter and then with the last ball of the over he bowled Darren Gough for one.

The Eagles were reduced to 47 for three in Henderson's next over with James Middlebrook being caught from his drive to mid-on and Henderson had figures of three for four from his first two overs.

Ronnie Irani and Andy Flower then brought a revival to the innings with Irani in particular in aggressive form. He hit Amjad Khan for the first of his four sixes. He raced to his half century from only 28 balls but on 61 he was held at the long-off boundary off Dexter and Essex were 99 for four in the 11th over.

Dexter inflicted further damage when he bowled Flower for 22 and four balls later had James Foster caught for one.

With the seventh and eighth wickets falling to James Tredwell in successive overs, the Eagles were 126th for eight in the 16 over. Finally, Amjad claimed the last two wickets with successive balls in the 19th over.

The Eagles had been quick to strike the first blow in Kent's innings after sending their opponents in. However, 36 off 26 balls from Dexter steadied them and Martin van Jaarsveld's unbeaten 37 was also key.

Henderson's first impression for Kent was a positive one as he saw

out the innings with Van Jaarsveld, finishing unbeaten on 31 before doing the damage with the ball.
