Surrey v Essex

A superb innings of 83 from Essex's Ravi Bopara led his team to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Surrey in the Twenty20 Cup at the Brit Oval.

Essex, chasing 189 for victory, were soon in trouble and lost their first two wickets with only seven on the board.

First to go was Mark Pettini (0) caught by Jonathan Batty off the bowling of Azhar Mahmood with the second ball of the innings.

In the next over Tim Murtagh snapped up the wicket of Ronnie Irani for one to a diving catch by Batty behind the stumps.

A stand of 69 in seven overs from Darren Gough and Bopara was broken by Ian Salisbury's third ball trapping Gough (37) leg before as he played across the line.

He then took the wicket of Andy Flower in his next over (eight), caught on the mid-wicket boundary.

Bopara then went to his half century from just 29 balls and together with James Foster shared an important stand of 62 in five overs before Rikki Clarke had Foster (29) easily caught, again on the mid-wicket boundary, by Mahmood.

With 22 runs still needed, Bopara was bowled by Jade Dernbach to give Surrey a chance of victory but Ryan ten Doeschate (eight) and James Middlebrook (10) steered them home with 10 balls to spare.

Earlier, Surrey lost James Benning (0) to the first ball of the innings caught at the wicket off the bowling of Gough as he chased a wide delivery.

Mark Ramprakash and Alistair Brown shared a stand of 39 before Brown fell to Andy Bichel when on 17. The Surrey batsman tried to drive over the top but could only chip straight to Irani at mid-off.

Clarke scored a quick-fire 28 before he fell in Tim Phillips's first over. The left-arm spinner deceived the Surrey all-rounder and bowled him around his legs after an attempted reverse sweep.

Former England batsman Ramprakash soon went to his 50 from 30 balls with six fours and a six before he too fell to Phillips for 54, brilliantly stumped by Foster as he pushed forward.

A fifth-wicket stand of 58 between Batty and Mahmood (14) was eventually broken by Bopara, who had the Pakistan international caught on the long-leg boundary.

Batty completed his half century soon after before Stewart Walters (0) was trapped leg before by a returning Gough with score on 178 for six.

Batty was seventh wicket to fall with the last ball of the innings, clean bowled by Bichel for 58, his best score in the competition.
