Middlesex v Sussex

Sussex beat Middlesex by nine wickets after dismissing the hosts for their lowest total in the Twenty20 Cup at Richmond.

Zimbabwean Murray Goodwin was unbeaten on 67 from 43 balls with 11 fours and a six, as Sussex overhauled their target with 7.2 overs to spare to inflict a fourth straight defeat on Middlesex who now only have a remote chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Yasir Arafat, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mike Yardy and Luke Wright took two wickets each as Middlesex, who lost seven wickets for 30 in seven overs at one stage, collapsed to 108 all out. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior took five catches.

Ben Scott made 19 at the end of the Middlesex innings to take them past three figures but their total was never going to be enough and Sussex won at a canter.

Arafat did the early damage dismissing both Middlesex opener with Owais Shah bowled for four as he came down late on the ball and Ed Smith drove straight to Wright at mid-off.

Scott Styris top-scored with 24 before he tried to pull Wright and became the first of Prior's victims and Jamie Dalrymple, fresh from England's one-day international failure against Sri Lanka, made 20 but he was the last Middlesex player to make any real contribution.

The all-rounder gave Mushtaq a simple return catch and was furious with himself when he left the pitch but the rest of the order went down with barely a whimper.

Nick Compton, Johann Louw and Chris Silverwood all fell to catches by Prior behind the stumps while Paul Weekes was run out and Middlesex did not even manage to bat out their full allocation of overs.

In Sussex's reply Prior was leg before to a Chris Silverwood full toss but Goodwin was untroubled and finished the game off with a flurry of shots in the 13th over. Silverwood did have the small consolation of bowling Middlesex's only maiden in the history of the competition and finished with one for 22 from his four overs.
