Durham v Yorkshire

Yorkshire completed a double over Durham and made it two wins from three Twenty20 Cup games with a 51-run victory at Chester-le-Street.

Durham's third defeat in four leaves them with virtually no chance of reaching the quarter-finals after their gambling of starting at 6pm, half an hour later than the norm, backfired.

They put Yorkshire in on a glorious evening, only for thick cloud to roll over as the visitors stumbled in the second half of their innings to close on 149 for six.

While both sides began with nine dot balls, Durham failed to match Yorkshire's acceleration and never got going in the gathering gloom, finally succumbing to a succession of desperate shots to be all out for 98 in the 18th over.

Michael Lumb scored 31 of Yorkshire's first 33 runs off 20 balls with five fours and a six before driving to mid-on in the fifth over.

It proved to be the top score as the other visiting batsmen all surrendered when well set and from 81 for two at the halfway stage Yorkshire finished around 20 short of what had looked likely.

But they were indebted to Australia-born seamer Mitch Claydon for imposing a stranglehold on Durham as he opened up with three overs for six runs.

Extracting good bounce by bowling short and straight, he also took the wicket of Gordon Muchall when he pitched one up, the frustrated batsman driving straight to mid-on.

Home skipper Dale Benkenstein, the hero of Friday's win against Lancashire, looked disappointed to be adjudged lbw first ball to Deon Kruis and after that Durham were never in the hunt.

Tim Bresnan briefly returned to Yorkshire duty before going off to play for England A and after his one-day international struggles he picked up three easy wickets during Durham's collapse.

Claydon came back to bowl the 18th over and immediately took the final wicket when Graeme Bridge drove to cover to finish with two for six.

The match was preceded by a minute's applause for Fred Trueman before a tribute from two Durham Light Infantry buglers.
