Brendon McCullum explained his stunning innings for Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening game of the Indian Premier League as surreal.
The Kiwi smashed a whopping 158 off a meagre 73 balls to carry his side to victory over Bangalore Royal Challengers by 140 runs, setting a new record for the highest individual score in an innings in Twenty20 cricket.

“I couldn’t ask for a better start to the tournament,” beamed McCullum when interviewed on Setanta Sports at the close of play.

“To get a score on the board, make a contribution like that and the manner in which it came about, and to come away with a victory at the end was fantastic, so I’m really pleased.

“There was so much excitement coming into the IPL from players around the world and fans alike, so to be a part of the first game that had so much intensity and excitement about it was a pretty surreal feeling.”

McCullum went on to explain the sheer magnitude of the atmosphere at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, before looking forward to his side’s next match against Deccan Chargers.

“It was amazing,” he said. “I guess it was everything the expectation had been built up as, and now I can’t wait for the next game at Eden Gardens where we’ll hopefully have a huge crowd.

“If we can play anywhere near as well as we did today then we’ll have a great opportunity [of winning].”
