The Hyderabad Deccan Chargers collapsed to 110 all out on a dreadful pitch against the Kolkatta Knight Riders after choosing to bat first in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Eden Gardens.
The match surface looked and played as though it was seven days old with every delivery gouging holes in the dry and crusty top and the visitors meagre total would have been halved were it not for their superstar Australia duo of Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds who scrambled together 55 between them.
Gilchrist struck two loose deliveries for six in his 23 from 22 deliveries before anybody could quite believe how bad the pitch was but Symonds was forced to work harder than ever before for a mere 32 from 39 balls.
Left arm spinner Murali Kartik led the way with 3-17 and part-time off spinner Mohammed Hafeez looked unplayable in returning figures of 1-8 in a full compliment of four overs.
"I've never played on a surface which has broken up after two or three overs - you can't expect to play Twenty20 cricket on something like that," Symonds said. Nobody was confidently predicting at the halfway point that the lowest total in the competition would be a losing one.
