Chennai SuperKings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed a sensational 65 from just 30 deliveries to transform his team’s fortunes on an awkward pitch at the R Chinnaswamy stadium in the IPL match against the Bangalore Royal Challengers.
Having seemed destined to fall short of 150 for most their innings, Dhoni’s late onslaught boosted the final score to an excellent 178-5.
Low and inconsistent bounce made for tricky batting as was illustrated by SuperKings opening batsmen Matthew Hayden who battled through 19 deliveries for a scratchy 13.
But fellow Aussie Michael Hussey has always been a man for a crisis and his shrewd cricketing brain was put to typically good use as he assessed conditions and was happy to score at no more than a run a ball through the middle stages of the innings.
Even Dhoni looked subdued for the first couple of overs he was at the crease but that changed in spectacular style when he clobbered Dale Steyn’s final over for 24. The South African speedster had been the model of accuracy and consistency in his first three overs which cost just 16 runs.
Hussey and Dhoni added 95 for the fourth wicket in a mere 6.5 overs before both perished to catches on the deep midwicket boundary off the final two balls of the innings.
Two South Africans are masking their IPL debuts having helped the Titans win the Standard Bank Pro20 in – Steyn joined Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis in the Bangalore XI while Albie Morkel was included in the SuperKings line-up instead of ace spinner Muttiah Muralitheran but did not bat.
