With the help of Sourav Ganguly's brilliant all-round show the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Deccan Chargers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Sourav Ganguly played a magnificent knock of 91 runs and picked two wickets. He also got consecutive second Man of the Match award.
Chasing a total of 205, Deccan Chargers faltered and lost some early wickets. Y Venugopal Rao (71), batted magnificently but his efforts were not enough and at the end, Chargers lagged 23 runs behind the target. With this loss, Chargers' hopes of making it to the semi-finals come to an end.
Kolkata bowler Ashok Dinda initiated the damage for Chargers and picked three crucial wickets of Herschelle Gibbs (4), Adam Gilchrist (24) and Rohit Sharma (33).
Umar Gul got rid of Ravi Teja with the first delivery of his spell. Sourav Ganguly after shining with the bat, was lethal with the ball too as he picked two wickets of Scott Styris and Sanjay Bangar conceding 25 runs in his four overs.
David Hussey also rose to the occasion and smashed unbeaten 57 runs and added 102 runs with his captain. Both the batsmen flayed the Deccan bowlers to all parts of the ground. Ganguly made 91 with the help of 11 fours and five sixes. Hussey also hit three sixes and four fours.
Ganguly came on to the crease after the fall of Salman Butt in the very first over of the match. He then added 69 runs with Aakash Chopra. P Vijaykumar finally claimed his wicket but it came too late as Ganguly had done the damage by then.
Aakash Chopra, struggling initially, scored 24 runs before Gibbs found him napping between the wickets and uprooted his stumps with a direct throw. Tatenda Taibu made 9 runs before RP Singh removed him.
