National selector Geoff Miller has told Setanta Sports News that competing in the Indian Premier League will not hinder any England player’s chances of selection on the international stage.
Miller’s comments come after Dimitri Mascarenhas was included in the 14-man squad announced on Friday for the forthcoming one-day series with New Zealand.
Mascarenhas is the only Englishman to have played in this year’s tournament but, with many more expected to follow his lead next season, the Hampshire man’s inclusion looks to augur well.
“We select on cricketing matters rather than exterior matters and he’s still got a lot to offer the England one-day squad,” Miller said. “Hopefully he’ll be part of a successful side.
“We appreciate what’s going on, we’re very aware of it and we’ll try and accommodate it as best we can. Our decision is based on passion and desire to play for England.”
Miller went onto explain the need to be patient with Andrew Flintoff’s return to the international fold from injury.
“There’s not a temptation to get him back as quickly as possible,” he added. “Yes, the England side is a better squad with Andrew performing to the best of his ability. We’ll give him as much time as possible to get himself right.
“We’ll listen to his medical people both at Lancashire and England. When he’s ready to go we’ll take it from there.”
