Virender Sehwag and David Warner were at their scintillating best to help the Delhi DareDevils record a comprehensive 29 run victory over the Kings XI Punjab after a run feast at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
Sehwag (77) lead the way, smashing 8 fours and 4 sixes as the Indian international made an impact for the first time in this year’s tournament to help the DareDevils set the Kings XI a mammoth run chase of 232.
The Kings XI conceded 20 fours and 12 sixes as their bowlers were tormented by Warner (77) and Sehwag who smashed them around the Feroz Shah Kotla with ease.
With the game all but out of their reach Shaun Marsh gave the Kings XI fans something to cheer about with a brilliant 95 from just 46 deliveries which included 9 fours and 6 sixes.
Faced with a mammoth run chase the Kings XI got off to a positive start buoyed by some poor fielding from the DareDevils who dropped Adam Gilchrist and Paul Valthaty inside the first two overs.
The IPL’s leading run scorer smashed consecutive sixes off the bowling of Irfan Pathan after he was dropped by Venugopal Rao out on the square leg boundary to help the Kings XI reach 25-0 after just 3 overs.
Luckily for the DareDevils Valthaty’s time at the crease was cut short when he picked out Yogesh Nagar in the covers at the end of Pathan’s next over.
Although Gilchrist (42) and Shaun Marsh kept the Kings XI hopes of causing an upset alive with a 2nd wicket partnership of 72 the DareDevils were never really troubled once Varun Aaron bowled the Kings XI skipper in the 11th over.
Dinesh Karthik (6) quickly followed and although David Hussey (20) and Marsh tried to spur the Kings XI onto victory the DareDevils held on to record a comprehensive victory after the visitors could only reach 202-6.
Having been put into bat the DareDevils got off a flying start thanks to David Warner and Sehwag who registered their best start in this year’s tournament with an opening stand of 146.
The pair made amends for a number of poor starts by taking their frustrations out on the Kings XI bowlers who struggled to control the ball on a green tinted wicket which favoured the batsman.
The DareDevils skipper made up for his dire run of form in the tournament by breaking free of the shackles to smash 77 from just 35 deliveries before his explosive innings was brought to an end by David Hussey in the 12th over.
Sehwag registered his first half century in this year’s tournament in the 11th over before he launched an astonishing blitz which saw him dispatch Hussey for 3 consecutive sixes before he picked out Dinesh Karthik at deep midwicket from Hussey’s 4th delivery.
Despite the loss Warner continued to set the pace before he fell in the 16th over to leave the DareDevils 179-3 with still 4 overs remaining in their innings.
Although Nagar (11) and Aaron Finch (3) failed with the bat after a long wait in the dug out, Venugopal Rao continued his rich vain of form to help the DareDevils reach 231-4.
The 29 year old smashed 28 from just 15 deliveries to halt the Kings XI recovery to leave the visitors chasing a mammoth 232 runs to register their fourth straight victory.
