Super Kings hold on after Sohal blitz

The Chennai Super Kings held on to record a tense 19 runs victory over the Deccan Chargers after successfully defending a total of 165-5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Suresh Raina lead the way for the defending champions scoring with 59 while Michael Hussey (46) and MS Dhoni (21) played significant support roles to help the Super Kings reach 165-5.

Faced with a tricky run chase the Chargers got off to a rapid start thanks to Sunny Sohal who recorded an impressive 24 ball half century which included 5 fours and 4 sixes to give the visitors the early advantage.

The opener got the game off to a dramatic start when he dispatched 3 fours and a six off the bowling of Albie Morkel in the 3rd over to help the visitors reach 38-0.

He followed this up by smashing another four and six off the bowling of Suraj Randiv in the 5th over before Ravichandran Ashwin was treated with the same contempt an over later.

The 23 year olds brilliant innings was finally brought to an end after he miss timed a reverse sweep off a delivery from Shadab Jakati which deep below the bat and crashed into the leg stump to leave the visitors 71-1 after 6.5 overs.

Despite the loss, Shikhar Dhawan (19) and Bharat Chipli (19) played important cameo as the pressure started to build on both teams with the Chargers needing another 58 runs from the final 7 overs of the match.

The balance was tipped in favour of the Super Kings in the 16th over after Doug Bollinger struck to remove Kumar Sangakkara (15) after the Chargers skipper was bowled by the Aussie to leave the visitors with a mountain to climb.

Cameron White (13) and JP Duminy (17) quickly followed two overs later as the Chargers run chase went off the rails as the Super Kings held on to record a vital victory.

Despite the early loss of Murali Vijay (3), who was bowled by Pragyan Ojha in the 4th over the Super Kings got off to a positive start with Hussey and Raina enjoying a 2nd wicket partnership of 60.

The pair got off to a fortunate start when Hussey was dropped by Cameron White as square leg just 2 deliveries after the dismissal of Vijay.

Although the runs were hard to come by the pair soon took control of the game, working the ball around the out field to keep the Chargers on the back foot despite the lack of boundaries.

Hussey led the way scoring 46 before he was dismissed by Harmeet Singh in the 13th over after the Aussie tamely pulled a long hop to Ishant Sharma out on the deep square leg boundary.

Despite making the break through the Chargers were unable to increase their advantage as Raina and Dhoni increased the tempo during a quick fire 3rd wicket partnership of 58.

The par smashed 4 fours and 3 sixes to take control of the game with a 32 ball half century partnership before Raina was dismissed by Pragyan Ojha in the 18th over.

Although the Chargers broke the partnership the Super Kings still increased their hold on the game thanks to Albie Morkel who smashed Sharma for three consecutive sixes in the penultimate over.

Despite the loss of Morkel (19) and Dhoni in the final over the Super Kings still managed to reach 165-5 which leaves the Chargers with a tricky run chase against the defending champions.
