The Kolkata Knight Riders increased their chances of a top two finish thanks to a 10 run Duckworth Lweis wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings in a top of the table clash at Eden Gardens.
Faced with a run chase of only 115 the Knight Ridders cruised to victory to move level on points with the Mumbai Indians at the top of the IPL group standings.
Despite the lose of Eoin Morgan (5) and Gautam Gambhir (16) the Knight Riders remained ahead of the required run rate to win the game in the 11th over after heavy ran forced the players off and the cover on to end the game prematurely.
The Super Kings hopes of a top two finish were dealt a blow after they were restricted to a total of 114-4 by the Knight Riders on a sluggish wicket after more then an hours delayed because of light drizzle before the game started.
Subramaniam Badrinath (54) led the way with a vital half century as the Super Kings struggled on a sluggish wicket against Brett Lee (8-0), Iqbal Abdulla (15-1) and Pathan (25-1).
Having only scored 49 runs during the opening 11 overs, Badrinath and Albie Morkel (30) gave the Super Kings a glimmer of hope with an important 4th wicket stand of 65.
The visitors got off to a disastrous start losing Murali Vivay (5) and Suresh Raina (4) struggled early on as they struggled to kick start their innings during the power play overs after MS Dhoni elected to bat after winning the toss.
The defending champions scored only 15 runs during the opening 6 overs thanks to impressive bowling displays form Lee (3 overs, 5-0), Iqbal Abdulla (2 over, 5-1) and Pathan (1 over, 3-1) who controlled the game with a mixture of pace and spin.
The Knight Riders stifled the Super Kings top order denying them any boundaries until the 9th over when Badrinath cleared the boundary with a six off the bowling of Pathan.
The 30 year old followed this up with a boundary in the next over but the Super Kings fight back was halted by Lakshmipathy Balaji who struck in the 11th over to remove Michael Hussy (15) who was caught by Eoin Morgan at midwicket.
Although Badrinath and Morkel offered the Super Kings renewed hope the Knight Riders will feel confident of chasing down the visitors total to move level on points with the Mumbai Indians at the top of the IPL group standings.
