The Chennai Super Kings all but secured their place in the IPL playoffs thanks to a comprehensive 18 run victory over the Delhi DareDevils at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
MS Dhoni and Subramaniam Badrinath led the way during a 4th wicket stand of 97 to help the defending champions fight back after the DareDevils had restricted them to a total of just 68-3 with just 9 overs top go after MS Dhoni won the toss.
Dhoni (63) ended the innings as the Super Kings top scorer closely followed by Badrinath (55) as the pair smashed 71 runs from the last 5 overs to leave the DareDevils facing a run chase of 177.
The Super Kings skipper led the way smashing three sixes during the final two overs as Ajit Agarkar and Irfan Pathan conceded 37 runs during the final two overs to give the home side the momentum.
Despite facing a tricky run chase, the DareDevils got off to a good start thanks to Naman Ojha who quickly scored 25 from just 14 deliveries which included 3 boundaries and 2 sixes.
David Warner added 21 as the visitors tried to take control of the game but once Albie Morkel struck to remove Naman the Super Kings took control of the game.
Warner quickly followed as the DareDevils innings went off the rails with wickets falling at regular intervals as they slipped to their 8th defeat in the year’s tournament.
The visitors, who were playing for pride after seeing their chances of reaching the play offs ended by the Mumbai Indians on Saturday produced an impressive bowling display for stand in skipper James Hopes.
Varun Aaron, who picked up the early wicket of Suresh Raina, was the pick of the bowlers conceding just 20 runs from his 4 overs to help the DareDevils stifle the home side.
Murali Vijay led the way early on, scoring 35 runs before he was caught by Venugopal Rao out on the deep square leg boundary at the end of the 11th over which was bowled by Agarkar.
Vijay led a charmed life though, the opener was dropped twice within the space of two deliveries after James Hopes and Shahbaz Nadeem put down relatively easy chances at the end of the 7th over.
Despite the loss of Michael Hussey (5) in the opening over the Super Kings got off to a good start thanks to Vijay and Raina who shared a 2nd partnership stand of 35.
Although Raina got off to a good start, dispatching Andrew McDonald for a boundary and a six in the 2nd over the Indian international was soon back in the dug out after he succumb to a short delivery from Aaron at the end of the power play overs.
