A tepid batting performance by the Royal Challengers Bangalore condemned them to a 47 run defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Despite facing a run chase of 191 runs, the Royal Challengers batted like it was a test match with Chris Gayle particularly ineffective despite scoring another half century.
The West Indian took 42 deliveries to reach the milestone and with wickets falling around him he reached 50 in the 17th over with the Royal Challengers 106-4 in their attempts to chase down the Knight Riders total of 190-4.
Gayle (86) increased the tempo slightly through the remaining overs to end the match as the leading scoring in this year’s tournament but when it really mattered the West Indian and his fellow teammates weren’t up to the challenge.
It proved to be an easy victory for the home side thanks in part to Gautam Gambhir who lead the charge with an impressive 93 which included nine boundaries and five sixes.
The Knight Riders skipper missed out on a well deserved century after he was dismissed by Zaheer Khan in 19th over but his innings proved to be enough to help the home side secure a comprehensive victory.
