India seamers Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar took two wickets apiece to restrict South Africa to 126 for nine in a Twenty20 game on Friday.
The Proteas made only 57 runs and lost four wickets in the first 10 overs, but middle-order duo Albie Morkel and Johan van der Wath restored order with scores of 27 and 21 respectively.
That offered much-needed respite for South Africa after the top of the line-up failed with the bat.
Loots Bosman was the first man out, making just one run before being caught by Sachin Tendulkar at slip off Zaheer Khan.
Herschelle Gibbs made only seven before smashing a wide ball straight to Suresh Raina at short cover off the bowling of Ajit Agarkar.
Captain Graeme Smith then became Zaheer's second victim, trapped lbw for 16.
South Africa were reduced to 41 for four when AB De Villiers edged Agarkar's delivery to Mahendra Singh Dhoni after adding only seven.
Justin Kemp contributed 22, the only other South African to post double figures.
Agarkar returned figures of two for 10 off 2.3 overs, while Zaheer went two for 15 off four overs.
