Van der Wath gets World Cup call up

Northamptonshire have been hit by the early departure of overseas paceman Johan van der Wath.

The South African has been called up for his country's squad for the Twenty20 World Championship and has been told to make a hasty return to his homeland.

And while his exit was not unexpected at the County Ground, it has come sooner than they thought.

"We've got no choice he has to go," head coach David Capel explained. "It's a call-up for his country and that means he leaves now. We wish him well and hope he has a successful time.

"We thought we might have another week or two before he left but that is not the case.

"Obviously he will be a loss because I think he has headed our attack superbly well this season.

"But, even though his departure is a little premature, it does give someone else a chance to come in and show what they can do."

That person will probably be another overseas performer although Capel admits there is still work to do on that front.
